Incidents in Indian airline industry involving pilots

Mumbai: In the recent past there have been several incidents in the Indian airline industry involving pilots and crew members, which has put the lives of hundreds of passengers in danger. The latest in the list is the false hijack alarm that was set off by the pilots of a Mumbai-bound Kingfisher Airlines.

Pilots of a Kingfisher flight from Hong Kong accidentally set off a hijack alarm while approaching the Mumbai airport on December 1. Sources said the aircraft was 10 miles from the airport when the alarm went off and the reason was a failure of the aircraft's radiotelephony system. However, according to a spokesperson for Kingfisher Airlines, the false alarm went off after the aircraft had landed at the airport. Also the cockpit crew of Kingfisher's flight IT 072 later clarified to Air Traffic Control (ATC) that the hijack alarm was false, triggered accidentally while switching frequencies for communication with ATC.

All aircraft have a special Squawk code frequency that is equivalent to a ship's SOS code at 121.5 MHz. According to a Kingfisher official, the hijack alarm code was triggered because its frequency is very close between two other frequencies in use.

On October 20, a prank played by check pilot almost crashed a Jet Airways flight in Mumbai. The incident happened, when the check pilot pulled out a circuit-breaker. He did it apparently to check the pilot's ability to handle in emergency.

The unthinking act set off a chain reaction, tripping the autopilot, making the flight director indications disappear and turning off the ground-proximity warning system. The aircraft went sinking at a rate faster than the maximum prescribed descent of 1,000 feet per minute over the hills behind Jarimari, Andheri, but - despite all this - the aircraft managed to make a safe landing, reports Times of India.

Jet Airways has ordered a probe. But it has not derostered the check pilot though both aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus have a strict policy warning flight crew against use of circuit-breakers during flight - they are not pulled even on a check or a test flight. A Jet Airways spokesperson said, "The flight had a normal approach and landing, carried out safely within the acceptable parameters. An internal inquiry is in progress."

There was another incident involving the cabin crew of Air India, who had a scuffle at 30,000 feet above sea level on October 3, which endangered the lives of 106 passengers and grossly violated safety norms. The airline staffers came to blows in the cockpit and galley of the Indian Airlines Airbus A-320 as the aircraft cruised over Pakistan en route to Delhi via Lucknow from Sharjah.

The cabin-versus-cockpit tiff originated on the ground in Sharjah itself and then turned into a full-blown fight once IC 884 took off soon after midnight. The cabin crew alleged that pilots harassed a 24-year-old female colleague who later filed a molestation complaint against them with the cops after the flight landed in Delhi. The pilots, on the other hand, accused a male flight purser of misconduct that seriously compromised flight safety, and said the accusation of molestation aimed to protect the complainant's purser friend - who has a commercial pilot licence (CPL)- from facing action.

New Delhi: State-run telecom service provider Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) Tuesday announced per second billing scheme for its 2G and 3G customers in the Delhi and Mumbai circles. Under the plan, calls made within the MTNL network will be charged half paise per second, while calls to other networks across the country will be charged one paise per second, the company said.

MTNL will also provide video calls across its 3G network for one paise per second. Text message rates have also been reduced to 25 paise for local, Re.1 for national and Rs.2.50 for international messages.

Satyam is expanding its operations in Malaysia

Mumbai: Mahindra Satyam is expanding its operations in Malaysia by moving more software development and delivery operations to its solution centre in that country, the IT bellwether said Tuesday. In a regulatory statement, the company said it would enlarge its Global Solution Centre in Kuala Lumpur by moving more global software development and delivery operations there. The centre is located in Cyberjaya, a prominent information technology corridor in Malaysia.

The state-of-the-art solution centre, which has a 1,100-seat development block and a data centre to host 1,100 servers, will serve as Mahindra Satyam's largest technology development and delivery facility outside India.

At present, the centre has 500 full-time local engineers serving local and global customers. "Selecting Malaysia to launch our international expansion underscores the faith we continue to have in Malaysia's advanced infrastructure, rich talent pool, and competitive cost environment," Satyam's senior vice-president (Asia Pacific) Rohit Gandhi said.

In June this year, the Hyderabad-based firm, formerly known as Satyam Computer Services, was acquired by Tech Mahindra, the IT services arm of the Mahindra group, after its founder B. Ramalinga Raju confessed to manipulating the company's accounts for several years.

Mahindra Satyam has development and delivery centres in many countries including the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Britain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China.

Twitter as a business tool with 24/7 tweetview

Bangalore: As more and more firms are increasing the adoption of Twitter as a business tool, companies are finding it difficult to track tweets related to their organization or products. Aimed at solving this problem for organizations, customer lifecycle management (CLM) solutions provider, 24/7 Customer, has launched 24/7tweetview. This is a Twitter-based social media research and strategy tool to help companies understand their customers better and become more competitive.

24/7tweetview is a tool that measures the combined influence of tweets on a company, by using advanced prediction, analytics and data mining technologies. It offers analysis and reports through data mining techniques and provides a comprehensive view of what is being said about the company on Twitter.

Mohit Jain, Chief Information Officer at 24/7 Customer, believes that the consumer voice is more dominant in Twitter compared to other social media. "With the rise of Twitter, many businesses are focused on how to identify, leverage and respond to customer opinions on these sites. The 24/7tweetview can enable businesses to effectively manage customer expectations voiced on Twitter," says Jain.

Though, there are other Twitter analytics tools that derive the overall score by the count of words pre-defined as positive or negative, the 24/7tweetview claims to analyze both the words and also the context of the tweets through the sentiment scores feature. The customers can also compare the tweets that they have received along with the tweets for another company and know how they are faring in the competition.

According to V Bharathwaj, Chief Marketing Officer of 24/7 Customer, globally there are over 50 million Twitter users and many use tweets to voice their opinion about companies or products. "With more users and companies using Twitter, it was an obvious choice for us when we decided to expand the product scope of 24/7 Innovation Labs to social media," Bharathwaj added.

There are two ways for companies to start using 24/7tweetview, a free version as well as a premium version, which comes with additional features. "As of now, we have around 200 companies signed up for this service and about 70 percent of them are for the premium category," says Bharathwaj. With Twitter Mania growing big among the companies, these tools can result in a win-win situation for both Twitter and the companies using it.

India churns out seven lakh engineers every year

New Delhi: India churns out around seven lakh engineers every year. And yet how many of them are actually good enough to win some of the prestigious domestic and global awards? The issue has come to the forefront with Infosys Technologies reportedly having failed to find a worthy candidate for its Infosys Engineering Science Prize 2009.

The company has decided not to give the prize in that category to anyone this year. Infosys' Chief Operating Officer (COO), SD Shibulal, told that there were 34 nominees for the engineering and computer science prize but even after relaxing the age limit to 55 years, the jury could not find anyone who met all the criteria of the Infosys Prize. So, the jury took the unanimous decision to not award the prize for the engineering sciences discipline this year.

Infosys Science Foundation is a not-for-profit trust set up by Infosys Technologies. The company has named three scientists and two academic experts as winners of Infosys Prize 2009 for outstanding contributions to scientific research.

The winner in physical sciences is Thanu Padmanabhan of Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophyics, Pune, in recognition of his contribution to a deeper understanding of Einstein's theory of gravity in the context of thermodynamics. For mathematical sciences, Ashoke Sen of Harish Chandra Research Institute at Allahabad was given the prize in recognition for his contributions to mathematical physics. For life sciences, K VijayRaghavan of National Centre of Biological Sciences in Bangalore got the award.

The winner in the social sciences and economics category is Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee of Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his contributions to the economic theory of development. Upinder Singh of the University of Delhi won an award for her contributions as an outstanding historian of ancient and early medieval India.

Invest in U.S. Real Estate and get Green card

New Delhi: The Obama administration extended the regional centre investment EB-5 program, which entitles investors who put in $1 million into regional centre real estate projects and create at least 10 jobs in the U.S., to green cards along with their families.

Simply put, this program allows investors a fast-track to U.S. green cards and permanent residency. If investors are willing to put money into a business carried out on in a designated backward area, the investment required is even lower at $500,000, reports Economic Times.

The EB-5 program is attracting a large number of hospitality entrepreneurs from Gujarat who are keen on setting up shop in the U.S. Many of the Gujarati hotel entrepreneurs also have strong family links in the U.S.

"The falling dollar has increased the number of applications in the EB-5 category in addition to access to branded hotel deals that are trading at 30-40 percent discount. This is definitely the time to buy as the U.S. real estate market is slowly recovering," says Sachin U Patel, Managing Principal of real estate development company American Life, which operates the EB-5 regional centres in Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett.

The regional centres are diversified funds or private business development projects that allow EB-5 investors to infuse the required funds and in return acquire a small ownership interest.

Most immigration experts are seeing a growing interest in the EB-5 category of visas. Mumbai-based Immigration Attorney Sudhir Shah says, "This is certainly a good time to apply for the EB-5 programme. There are several schemes on offer wherein you merely have to invest money and in return you get a green card without having to actively participate in the business. For those who are looking at moving to the U.S. to run a motel or store there, the reduced property prices are a big attraction too, as they can get more value for their dollar investments."

The EB-5 scheme, though proving to be very attractive, is however not without glitches. Proving that the funds available for investment are from lawful sources can be a challenge for some Indian investors.
