Nokia C7 shipments begin - Official News from Nokia

Espoo, Finland - The smartphone for the design-conscious social networker, the Nokia C7, has started shipping to customers around the world. The second Nokia smartphone based on the new Symbian platform, the Nokia C7 follows hot on the heels of the company's entertainment powerhouse, the Nokia N8.

The Nokia C7 combines stainless steel and glass in a sleek, full-touch design. The 3.5 inch AMOLED display is ideal for networking, with updates from Facebook and Twitter fed directly to the home screen, as well as one touch access to many popular email accounts including Ovi Mail, Yahoo!® Mail and Windows Live(TM) Hotmail. The Nokia C7 also opens up a world of apps, games, videos, and web and location-based services through the Ovi Store.

"The Nokia C7 is our second smartphone based on the new version of Symbian to hit the market," says Jo Harlow, head of smartphones at Nokia. "Designed specifically with the style-conscious consumer in mind, the Nokia C7 also brings excellent social networking abilities, making it perfect for people who want to check-in and stay up to date."

Following the release of this social-networking centric device, Nokia will be setting out to find the most active Facebook user from the more than 1.4 million fans on Nokia's own global Facebook page. Nokia will then pick five finalists who will each be provided with a Nokia C7 to organize a party using various social networks. The fan who best captures their party through Facebook - generating the most coverage with updates and posts - will win a Nokia C7 for themselves and 20 of their friends.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia C7 is EUR 335 before applicable taxes or subsidies, with pricing and availability varying from region to region, operator to operator.

Microsoft launched iPhone App

Finally, Microsoft has launched an IM app for the iPhone, just a few hours before the launch of Apple's fourth version of iPhone operating system (iOS4). Windows Live Messenger for iPhone includes many key features that users expect from an IM app, reports Jessica Dolcourt of cnet.

The new IM app includes features like social networking and e-mail. It provides one screen to Windows Live helping users to update their status. There is also a button that takes the users to their e-mail in-box.

There is another feature in the app that enables the users to add friends, to chat and to send e-mails. The chat screen allows open conversation and helps the users to switch among them. There are options in the last screen allowing users to upload photos, take new ones and view their windows Live Gallery with it. In Addition, the screen also enables users to tag photographs.

There are some features that need to be materialized. Though the app has triple checking credentials, logging off, signing back in, and reinstalling the app with some more reboots thrown in, the app shows the user as Someone on Windows Live, despite having uploaded photos of the users.

4G in India: TRAI Letter to Telecos & Manufacturers

4G refers to the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards. It is a successor to 3G and 2G families of standards. The nomenclature of the generations generally refers to a change in the fundamental nature of the service, non-backwards compatible transmission technology and new frequency bands. The first was the move from 1981 analogue (1G) to digital (2G) transmission in 1992. This was followed, in 2002, by 3G multi-media support, spread spectrum transmission and at least 200 kbit/s, soon expected to be followed by 4G, which refers to all-IP packet-switched networks, mobile ultra-broadband (gigabit speed) access and multi-carrier transmission. Pre-4G technologies such as mobile WiMAX and first-release 3G Long term evolution (LTE) are available on the market since 2005 and 2009 respectively.

A 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure all-IP based solution where facilities such as IP telephony, ultra-broadband Internet access, gaming services and streamed multimedia may be provided to users.

This article uses 4G to refer to IMT Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced), as defined by ITU-R.

An IMT advanced cellular system must have target peak data rates of up to approximately 100 Mbit/s for high mobility such as mobile access and up to approximately 1 Gbit/s for low mobility such as nomadic/local wireless access, according to the ITU requirements. Scalable bandwidths up to at least 40 MHz should be provided.

In all suggestions for 4G, the CDMA spread spectrum radio technology used in 3G systems and IS-95 is abandoned and replaced by frequency-domain equalization schemes, for example multi-carrier transmission such as OFDMA. This is combined with MIMO (i.e. multiple antennas(Multiple In Multiple Out)), dynamic channel allocation and channel-dependent scheduling.

Nokia vs Apple - Smartphone War

Nokia Oyj, the world's largest mobile handset company, has launched a slew of smartphones to check its declining share in this growing segment of the market, where it faces stiff competition from Apple's iPhone and Google's Android-based devices.

The Finland-based company is still the market leader in the smartphones segment with a 41 per cent share, but is under pressure to hold on to the title.

It today launched its N8 model in the Asia-Pacific region to fend off its competitors. N8 is the first phone to be launched with Nokia's improved Symbian 3 operating system. The phone will be available globally, including India, from September onward and is priced at 370 euros (Rs 21,019).

The industry sees the N8 as an attempt by Nokia to win back customers moving on to a host of phones from Taiwan's HTC, whose phones are based on Android systems - Apple's iPhone 4, and Blackberry. The N8 offers 8 of GB memory, faster access to social networking sites like FaceBook and Twitter and high quality video recording.

"Nokia N8 is a great device for people who want to create content, connect to their preferred networking site," Nokia Senior Vice President, Smartphones, Jo Harlow said.

The world's largest mobile phone-maker is also trying to lure developers to write content and make applications for its devices. Better content and improved software are the major reasons for increasing sale of iPhones and Android devices, whereas Nokia seems to have lagged behind.

Nokia launched two other models today. One of them, the X6, has 8 GB of memory and is targeted at entertainment seekers with services like unlimited music downloads, social networking, chat and games. The other, the Nokia X5, has 2 GB of memory (expandable to 32 GB) and offers music and networking services.

These phones will also be available from September. The Nokia X6 is priced at 225 euros (Rs. 12,790), while the X5 will cost 165 euros (Rs. 9,370), exclusive of taxes and subsidy.

The company has also made a late entry into the dual SIM handset segment with the launch of its C2 and C1 models, which are priced in the range of 30 euros to 45 euros. Other mobile handset-makers in the Indian market had introduced dual SIM handsets, where two SIM cards can be used, a long time ago.

Nokia also introduced two low cost, low memory phones in the price range of 35-39 euros (Rs. 1,998-Rs 2,215).

There is a plethora of smartphones from international companies like LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson flooding the Indian market. In addition, local companies like Videocon, Fly, Zen and many others are entering the growing segment. The resulting competition could bring down smartphone prices.

Apple iPhone Pre Orders Stopped - Apple Apologies

Apple today apologized for the iPhone 4 ordering mess yesterday, and boasted that it and its carrier partners had taken more then 600,000 orders for its new smartphone.

Meanwhile, AT&T confirmed that is has suspended pre-orders through its site and stores.

"We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock," Apple said in a statement released Wednesday, referring to the ordering bungles that left many users frustrated and angry.

Apple added that demand for the iPhone 4 was "far higher than we anticipated," which resulted in "many order and approval system malfunctions."

Apple's and AT&T's Web sites essentially collapsed under the load, returning errors and time-outs when many customers tried to place orders. By the end of the day, both Apple and AT&T had exhausted the supplies they'd set aside for delivery on June 24, the official iPhone 4 launch date.

"It was extremely frustrating," said Brian Marshall, a Wall Street analyst with BroadPoint AmTech. "I continue to be extremely frustrated with AT&T and its service." Marshall said he had tried 10 or more times Tuesday to order an iPhone 4, all unsuccessful.

"That's par for the course for AT&T, unfortunately," said Marshall.

For its part, AT&T said that sales were 10 times higher than the first day of iPhone 3GS pre-ordering in June 2009, and added that it had received more than 13 million upgrade eligibility requests during the day, a number three times higher than the record.

"Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we're suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we've already received," AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said in an e-mail Wednesday.

AT&T has removed the iPhone 4 from its Web site. Currently, only last year's iPhone 3GS can be found there.

Siegel did not set a date when AT&T would again take iPhone 4 orders. "The availability of additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking pre-orders," he said.

Apple, however, still shows the iPhone 4 16GB and 32GB models as available on its online store, with a projected ship date of July 2.

Unlike Apple, AT&T's statement did not mention customers' encounters with its ordering system, or apologize for the problems.

Some customers had to go to great lengths to make sure their orders were processed as promised. Computerworld reader Dennis Hoffman, for example, placed his iPhone 4 pre-order with AT&T between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. ET Tuesday, just hours after the carrier started taking orders. Later in the day, however, Hoffman received an e-mail that said his order had been canceled.

Hoffman spent hours Tuesday night working his way through AT&T's online chat and telephone customer service, but was eventually rewarded when an AT&T representative restored his order and said he would receive it on June 24.

Marshall has projected iPhone sales during 2010 at 40 million units, a 59% increase over 2009, with 8.8 million of those selling in the quarter that ends June 30, a jump of 68% over the same period last year. "These are very conservative," he said. "I have a high degree of confidence that Apple will exceed those numbers."

Apple, AT&T, Best Buy, Radio Shack and Wal-Mart are slated to kick off in-store sales on June 24.

Apple's top paid App developed by Indians

Bangalore: Two Indian born Stanford graduate students have created a $3.99 application in the iPad. It is the top paid app in the entire iPad section of the App Store. The Pulse Reader app in the iPad was developed by Akshay Kothari (23) and Ankit Gupta (22) at the Institute of Design of Stanford University.

Kothari said the project was inspired by 'a personal frustration at the whole news reading experience' on mobile devices. The stylish and easy to use news aggregator service was developed in the Launch Pad class, where the budding entrepreneurs are given an opportunity to develop and introduce a product in just ten weeks.

Pulse is a clean and visual news aggregator and the reader takes up to 20 news sources that can be followed and a visual mosaic of the news can be created. The article can be tapped and a clean rendered view of the news story can be presented. The app allows users to see text-only versions of articles, which are basically cleaned-up versions of a news site's RSS feeds, or to see the full articles as they are presented on the Web. It also lets sharing articles through Twitter and Facebook by passing the individual sharing tools presented by each news site.

News organizations are yet to get accustomed to iPad strategies but are quite hopeful about the success of pulse. "You absolutely do not have to give away something great for free," said Michael Dearing, a former eBay executive who is a teacher of the Launch Pad class. "If you build something great, people will pay you for it," added Dearing.

Nearly 15,000 people have downloaded this app and it has generated more than $40,000 in revenue, taking into account Apple's 30 percent cut. Akshay and Ankit have created a company, Alphonso Labs, and are now working on versions of the app for other devices, as well as talking to potential investors.

Top 5 Android phones

Bangalore: After it was launched couple of years back, Android based phones are today becoming a preferred choice for mobile users across the globe. According to NPD Group, the unit sales for Android smartphones ranked second among all smartphone OS handsets sold in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2010. BlackBerry OS and the iPhone OS ranked first and third respectively. So, which are the top five phones powered by Google's Android that are creating a buzz in the smartphone market?

Motorola Droid

This is one phone that many believe can give the toughest competition for Apple's iPhone. The phone is distributed exclusively by Verizon Wireless in U.S., which promoted the Droid as an Apple iPhone-alternative. The phone features 3.7-inch 854 x 480 touchscreen display with a 5-megapixel low light capable digital camera and a full QWERTY physical keyboard. The Motorola Droid runs Android version 2.1. The Motorola Droid comes with a 16GB microSD memory card.

Droid is powered by ARM Cortex A8 CPU clocked at 600 Mhz the same processor that powers the iPhone 3GS and the Omnia HD. Motorola has christened the phone as Milestone in India, which is expected to be launched soon with a speculative price tag of around Rs.34,000.

HTC Legend

The Legend is touted to be the successor to the HTC Hero, which was on the top five smartphones list from 2009. The HTC Legend brings many improvements, which include an optical trackball, aluminum unibody enclosure, a slightly faster processor and more RAM. Most importantly, it runs on Android OS v2.1 (Eclair), while the former was launched with Android OS, v1.5 (Cupcake).

The 3.2-inch AMOLED screen is slightly smaller than that of an iPhone, but supports the same resolution: 320x480 pixels. HTC Legend was launched in India in April this year at a price of Rs. 25,990, while the Hero was launched at Rs. 31,990 in most parts of India.

Nexus One

The much awaited phone developed by Google, codenamed 'HTC Passion', is manufactured by HTC Corporation and it hit the markets early this year. Google currently offers Nexus One on the T-Mobile and AT&T networks in the U.S. The Nexus One has a 3.7 inch AMOLED screen with PenTile matrix pixel arrangement. The phone features a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash and digital zoom, GPS receiver, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and 802.11b/g WiFi capabilities.

The Snapdragon processor in the phone allows for advanced capabilities including 720p video playback. Though Google has officially not launched the phone in India, those interested to buy it can do so by taking the online route for around Rs. 34,000.

Acer Stream

Though Acer is a relatively new entrant in the smartphone arena, with just three phones under its belt, its large presence in the PC market can help the company to compete with the top smartphone players. iPhone, BlackBerry helps in finding Corruption

Mexico City: Curbing corruption may be easier with a new application that enables users of iPhones and BlackBerrys to catch police taking bribe and also check traffic instructions.

The new application created for iPhone and the iPod will soon be available to BlackBerry users. It has a traffic-fine calculator, a map showing directions to parking lots where vehicles are impounded after their drivers violate traffic rules.

The anti-bribe programme costs 20 pesos (about $1.50) in the virtual Apple store, and in less than three months has had more than 11,000 downloads, the administrator of the Futuro Movil company, Daniel Martinez Landeros, said.

Apart from having the list of emergency numbers, the programme gives information about the type of vehicles allowed to commute in any specific area on a particular day and restrictions about the use of old vehicles.

The company has also developed an application to keep users updated about the traffic along their way and alternative routes.

The system will inform the users about road accidents, detours besides giving them access to the history of each vehicle to see if it has any traffic fines pending.
