Google launched Command-Line tool

Google has unveiled Command Line tools especially for the developers. The open source software, Command Line tool is available for Linux, Mac and Windows. It will allow users to perform complicated tasks on Google sites, reports Thomas Claburn from Information Week.

"GoogleCL is a command-line utility that provides access to various Google services," explain Google engineer Jason Holt and former Google intern Tom Miller in a blog post. "It streamlines tasks such as posting to a Blogger blog, adding events to Calendar, or editing documents on Google Docs."

While Google provides instructions for installing GoogleCL on Linux, it only points to online posts by third-parties that describe how to install the software on Mac and Windows. Mac installation is easier if the user has already installed software like MacPorts or homebrew.

The open source project Wiki indicates that easier Mac and Windows installation may available in the future.

GoogleCL is a Python application that uses Python gdata libraries to make Google Data API calls from the command line. It currently provides access to the following services, arranged in order of implementation completeness: Picasa, Docs, YouTube, Blogger, Calendar, and Contacts. Users can use GoogleCL to do things like list, delete, and create Blogger posts, Picasa albums and images, or open Google Docs in an editor like vim.

There are other open source projects, goofs and Goose, for instance, that aim to provide similar functionality for Google Calendar and Google Search. At some point, these projects may be merged with GoogleCL.

Google's OS revolution in Remote Desktop

Bangalore: Google's upcoming Chrome operating system - a new OS that will arrive on netbook computers later this year. It is also going to offer a feature 'chromoting' - a remote desktop app for your new cloud computer that Google engineers have dubbed, reports The New York Times.

We're adding new capabilities all the time. With this functionality (unofficially named chromoting), Chrome OS will not only be a great platform for running modern web apps, but will also enable you to access legacy PC applications right within the browser.

In Google's case, the technology would be used to run so-called legacy applications that Chrome OS does not support. By legacy, Google means any application that doesn't run in a Web browser like Google Chrome, which serves as the basis of the new Internet-only OS, also called Chrome.

It includes the Adobe Creative Suite, perhaps, whose flagship program Photoshop is top among designers. Or maybe the full Microsoft Office suite, whose desktop programs are still more feature-rich than Google's online Docs service. Perhaps as a new competitor to desktop and notebook computer operating systems like Microsoft Windows and Apple's OSX instead of just a netbook alternative.

Then again, the world is turning to lightweight computing. So much can be done online these days. As Apple CEO Steve Jobs recently said at the D8 conference, we're entering a 'post-PC' era, referring to the eventual phase out of the personal computer in favor of lighter, more thin client-esque platforms like, of course, Apple's new iPad tablet computer.

What is VoIP?

Voice over IP (VoIP) is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Internet telephony refers to communications services — voice, facsimile, and/or voice-messaging applications — that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating an Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end.

VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. Codec use is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.

IRCTC Login - IRCTC New Beta Version Available

BANGALORE, INDIA: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC), which also provides online passenger reservation system, has launched a beta version of the revamped site, which is claimed to be more user-friendly and efficient.

The beta version of the new site is available at https://www.irctc.co.in/cgi-bin/beta.dll/irctc/services/home.do#

The new interface is intended to increase the number of visitors who book rail tickets using the site, said Subir Agrawal, director - Consulting, BroadVision - Asia Pacific Region. BroadVision is looking after the website.

“We observed that out of the total number of visitors to the IRCTC only 45 per cent book tickets. Our aim is to increase this number of visitors by making the process more interactive and easy,” he said.

One of the new steps taken is instant booking; the travellers need not login/register for the booking. Anyone can book tickets.

The team is using Web 2.0 platforms and Ajax for enabling more features in the site. The new site would have drop-down options and provide more information on the same web page.

“One need not put a separate request for the train, seats, availability and fare. The intelligent enquiry software would help getting the required information from a single request to central server and that in return bring down the load on the servers,” added Agrawal.

Apart from this, the department would have more powerful servers to take up the loads especially during the peak hours of booking season and timings.

One of the biggest challenges for BroadVision is server loads, which freezes the systems for minutes during booking the tickets especially at 8 am.

According to Subir Agrawal, the number of bookings on an average had been increasing multifold compared to the servers/infrastructure. These bookings and enquiry request are 6-7 times higher during the peak hours than the rest of the day. So while the existing infrastructure is well equipped to handle the daylong traffic, it is the peak hour traffic that clogs servers.

He shared that the average number of booking done in a day is around 3 lakh in comparison to a thousand booking done some years ago. According to him, new-age technologies like virtualization are already being tested, but even they have their limitation.

“The best suit would be if we could get more 40-50 servers just for the peak hours to share the load, but none of the systems integrators today provide such facility on rent or any other ways.”

Also three key elements come into play while booking – Central Reservation System (CRS) maintained by Indian Railways, the transaction gateway (maintained by respective banks) and finally the provider of web applications, (BroadVision).

“The three need to collaborate together to get the best solution forward. IRCTC statistics suggest that in a month the success rate on transaction for bookings done by credit cards is around 72-75 per cent, while in case of net banking/debit card, it is around 67-70 per cent,” he added.

IRCTC is the most crowded website in the country. And given the ever-increasing penetration of Internet in cities and villages alike, IRCTC would see more and more eyeballs on the website. Though it claims to update the back-end technology in every two-three years, its problem does not seem to end, bringing in more responsibility on the web enabler like BroadVision.

Facebook security

Bangalore: Networking is a way to develop relationships that help you gain insight into an industry, a company, or a career path. 65 to 85 percent of jobs are found through networking. 90 percent of the Indian workforce agrees to the fact that social networking sites play a vital role in their career development. But the recent issues on Facebook securities have shaken the mindset of Indian techies.

A recent online survey shows that around 16 percent of the Fcebook users claiming to have already stopped using Facebook as a result of inadequate control over their data. Almost two thirds of Facebook users are considering leaving due to the same reason.

"Facebook make it difficult for the average user to understand or manage this. I don't think it has much respect for you or your data, especially in the context of the future. My main concern about Facebook is that it shares data in ways users don't reasonably expect. And I think majority of the techies feel the same," says Sumesh Software Engineer from a U.S. based financial firm.

Even though, Facebook have admitted recently that it had made mistakes in its privacy policies and promised to roll out new tools that would make it easier for its 400 million users to control their personal data. It is unclear as to whether any changes will be substantial enough to address user concerns. But majority of the techies feel that the privacy issues started way back in 2007 and whenever news comes up it used to add new updates to its settings and get rid of it.

Muthu, Principal Engineer at Yahoo says "Comparatively the privacy settings in Facebook are really confusing and one point of time people won't read all of them and we may miss privacy."

Majority of the Indian mindset are scared to fill up questions in privacy settings since they are very personal and this leads to another issue of privacy. Facebook will need to make sure further changes to the privacy policy are clear, concise and in the interest of making it easier for members to know exactly who has access to whatever they chose to upload.

Vishnu a software Engineer from Infosys said "Most still don't know how to set their Facebook privacy options safely, similar questions are asked in different ways and it is really confusing. As advanced communication devices and new sites are being launched, the youth is sharing more stuff online, and there should be enough privacy or else this might lead into greater problems."

The survey showing that only 24 percent of users aren't thinking about quitting due to privacy .But even they raise issues with Facebook. Nishikant Pushkar Software Engineer from Accenture said, "It is really disappointing to see the suspicious links which you click get published on friend's wall without your knowledge."

The techies suggest that there is a common feeling of insecurity about whether the private information and pictures are being shared without knowledge. Therefore social networking sites should decide upon on what is good for their users and their mindset needs to be changed. There are plenty of famous examples of compromises due to weak security features, such as the hacking of sarah Palin's or salma Hayek's e-mail. You can suffer from the same problem if someone close to you wants to compromise your account. Majority prefer to quite as a precaution since the privacy issue is a symptom of a larger set of issues.

"Actually it's hard to change your habits. Majority of people find it difficult to quit since it was really engaging and entertaining. But now these privacy issues demands us to quit," techies added.

Facebook blocked in Bangladesh

Dhaka : Bangladesh temporarily blocked the social networking site Facebook on Saturday, after a man was arrested for uploading content onto it deemed offensive. Other users had reportedly posted other kinds of potentially offensive content, including anti-religious and pornographic materials.

Last day Pakistan was banned Facebook and twitter account which has more popularity, by an order issued by the Lahore High Court. The website faced the restriction over a page,a hosting contest for blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Mohammad.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mahbub Alam Rodin, aged 30, in charges of uploading cartoons of some political leaders on the website. Rodin's activity on Facebook was classified as "offensive", said Commander Mohammad Sohail, director of RAB's Legal and Media side, as reported by The Daily Star. RAB asked to block all seven accounts of Rodin in Facebook. Rodin used pseudonyms like "Brigadier Mahadi", "Sepahi Mahadi", "Imam Hossain", "Rodin Al", "Mohammad Al Mahadi" and "Junaida Khandaker Zihan", Sohail said.

Europe Advicing Google, MS, Yahoo

Berlin: European data protection officials have been advising the big search engines like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft to shorten the period they sustain information on computer users. According to the officials these search engines have broken the rules by holding information on the computers for a long time. The US Federal Trade Commission will be asked to examine if the practices of the three companies violated American law.

The advisory panel to the European Commission asked the three companies to put in charge outside auditors to verify that their practices of yielding individual data truly eliminates all links o individuals. The European Union data protection rules hold that, search engines to cut off all traceable links to individual computers totally after six months.

Microsoft which operates Bing search engine said that it would abide by the commission's request to provide data from individuals after six months. But it would retain software cookies and other session identifiers for 18 months.

European data protection officials have been urging the search engines since 2007 to shorten the time they retain information on computer users. In response, the engines have cut retention periods from 18 months, but the moves are still not enough to satisfy the regulators.

Google maintains data for nine months and Yahoo is set to remove a part of computer's unique identification number after 90 days but reserved the right to recreate individual logos at the request of law.

The article 29 suggests that the methods were insufficient and violated European Union data protection rules.

Nokia, Opera Supports Adobe Flash

London: While Apple, the American manufacturer of consumer electronics, has pulled out its support for Adobe Systems' Flash, Nokia and Opera have assured their support for the software in its bitter row with Apple.

Adobe's Flash multimedia software was hit by Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs' comment last month, saying that the software is unreliable and ill-suited for mobile devices. Contrary to Jobs, Jon von Tetzchner, Co-Founder of Opera said that Adobe's Flash is the only proprietary part of the Web that the browser supports.

Similarly, Alberto Torres, Chief of Nokia's Solutions Business Unit, told that Adobe's Flash multimedia software is supported by Nokia as well.

While Apple has not allowed Flash on its iPhone and iPad, there are a lot of videos and games found on many Internet sites, which are Flash-based. The hostility between Apple and Adobe has been brewing for months, with both of them criticizing each other.
