The Department of Technical Education was established in G.O.Ms.No.1166, Education Department dated 5-6-1957 to bring about coordinated efforts for the development of Technical Education by pooling of Engineering Colleges from the Director of Public Instructions and the Polytechnics from the Department of Industries and Technical Examinations from the Commissioner of Government Examinations.

About Technical Education

The Department of Technical Education was established in G.O.Ms.No.1166, Education Department dated 5-6-1957 to bring about coordinated efforts for the development of Technical Education by pooling of Engineering Colleges from the Director of Public Instructions and the Polytechnics from the Department of Industries and Technical Examinations from the Commissioner of Government Examinations.

Functions

To implement the policies of the Government on Technical Education in general and Technician Education in particular.

To co-ordinate and regulate working of technical Institutions in the State at Degree and Diploma level.

To liaison with the A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi, Southern Regional Committee of A.I.C.T.E., at Chennai, the State Government, the State Council of Higher Education, Board of Apprenticeship Training and other bodies connected with the Technical Education.

To cause inspection of Commercial and Technical Institutions imparting Typewriting, Shorthand etc., and issue recognition orders.

To co-ordinate with the State Board of Technical Education and Training, an autonomous body for review and revision of curriculum, Syllabi and scheme of Examinations for various diploma courses offered in Polytechnics, to conduct the Common Entrance Examination for Polytechnics (CEEP) and to arrange for staff Development & refresher training Programs.

To identify training places in industry for placement of diploma holders in various branches of Engineering and Non-Engineering Subjects under Apprenticeship Training Programme.

Commissioner of Technical Education has been nominated as Nodal Agency for monitoring approval of new institutions offering Engineering/MCA/MBA/B-Pharmacy courses etc. by State and A.I.C.T.E.

The Department has 120 Polytechnics (65 Government and 55 Private Polytechnics) with an intake of 21,210, 225 Engineering Colleges with an intake of 65960, 270 MCA Colleges with an intake of 13,495 and 205 MBA/PGDBA Colleges with an intake of 11,230, 31 B-Pharmacy Colleges with 1,770 intake.
