Car pollution can damage brain

WASHINGTON: Being exposed to highway pollution can cause brain damage in mice akin to memory loss and Alzheimer's disease, American researchers said.

Scientists recreated the airborne pollutants that come from the burning of fossil fuels andtheweathering ofcar parts and pavement, and exposed mice to the harsh air for 15 hours per week over 10 weeks.

Thetiny air particleswere "roughly one-thousandth the width of a human hair , and too small for car filtration systems to trap," but exerted massive damage on the brains of the exposed mice , said the study . "You can't see them , but they are inhaled and have an effect on brain neurons that raises the possibility of long-term brain health consequences of freeway air ," said senior author Caleb Finch of the University of Southern California .

Scientists found the exposure resulted in "significant damage" to neurons involved in learning and memory , and they detected "signs of inflammation associatedwith premature aging and Alzheimer's disease ."

More researchis necessary to determine if the same effects could be seen in humans . "Of course this leads to the question , 'How can we protect urban dwellers from this type of toxicity ?' And that's a huge unknown ," Finchsaid . AFP

The Jan Lokpal Bill- Anna hazare

The Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen's ombudsman Bill) is a draft anti-corruption bill drawn up by prominent civil society activists seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body that would investigate corruption cases, complete the investigation within a year and envisages trial in the case getting over in the next one year.

Drafted by Justice Santosh Hegde (former Supreme Court Judge and present Lokayukta of Karnataka), Prashant Bhushan (Supreme Court Lawyer) and Arvind Kejriwal (RTI activist), the draft Bill envisages a system where a corrupt person found guilty would go to jail within two years of the complaint being made and his ill-gotten wealth being confiscated. It also seeks power to the Jan Lokpal to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without government permission.

Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi and other known people like Swami Agnivesh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Anna Hazare and Mallika Sarabhai are also part of the movement, called India Against Corruption. Its website describes the movement as "an expression of collective anger of people of India against corruption. We have all come together to force/request/persuade/pressurize the Government to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill. We feel that if this Bill were enacted it would create an effective deterrence against corruption."

Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare will observe fast unto death from today until the government enacts a comprehensive law like the Jan Lokpal Bill to tackle the menace.

"My fast unto death begins on Tuesday. I was saddened when the Prime Minister rejected the demand by leading civil society members to include them and senior ministers in the joint committee to draft the Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen's ombudsman Bill)," 72-year-old Hazare told a press conference in New Delhi on Monday.

He said that a Group of Ministers headed by Sharad Pawar is looking into the contents of the proposed anti-corruption bill and civil society members would be consulted later.

Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi and social reformist Swami Agnivesh were also present and pledged their support to Hazare.

Hazare lamented that the views of eminent persons like Justice (Retd) Santosh Hegde, advocate Prashant Bhushan and Agnivesh were not considered important by the government and "a minister like Sharad Pawar, who is known for possessing large amounts of land in Maharashtra, is heading a committee that will draft the bill."

Swami Agnivesh said he attended the meeting this morning of the sub-group on transparency of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) headed by Sonia Gandhi.

He said a 'Jan Lokpal' should be set up at the Centre and a 'Jan Lokayukta' appointed in each state to handle corruption cases, probe them and ensure prosecution.

"If the NAC had also decided to look into our demands, Hazare would not have to sit on fast from tomorrow. At an earlier meeting of ours with the GoM, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily kept saying there was no precedent of having a joint committee to draft such a bill", Agnivesh said.

Bedi said just like the nation united during the cricket world cup to boost India to victory, people, activists and media have to create a non-stop movement till the Jan Lokpal Bill is adopted by Parliament.

The activists also claimed support of 1983 cricket world cup winning captain Kapil Dev and said he had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh support their demand.

The activists handed over a copy of the letter written by Kapil Dev to the Prime Minister on March 30 in which he said he was "pained" to see once scam after another come out during the Commonwealth Games (CWG).

The letter said many committees have been set up to go into the scams but no concrete action has been taken so far.

"Why can't we have an independent Lokpal to look into these scams. I consider you as the cleanest politician in the recent history and I urge you for a Jan Lokpal Bill," Kapil Dev added.

Kirsten retired from the cricket

Gary Kirsten, the former South African opener and current Indian coach, is watching the Indian team play its last match under his watch today at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. That the match happens to be the World Cup final is a testament to the veteran South African star's coaching ability.

At the last practice session before the final Kirsten led the Indian team through its final drills before the big game. It was an emotional moment for the inspirational coach who is on the verge of leading the Indian cricket team to its second world cup victory.

He took over three years ago at a time when the Indians were facing a hard time in international cricket.

Kirsten's tensure saw India become the number one test team in the world. The 43-year old hard hitting opening batsman expressed his feelings about taking the team India to the pinnacle of the World cup by saying that he was keeping his fingers crossed.

Kirsten retired from the cricket after making his mark as one of the finest opening batsmen in the game. Herschelle Gibbs who shared the crease with Kirsten for South Africa over the years praised the dedication and hard work that marks Kirsten as an exemplary coach.

The Indian captain, M.S Dhoni, was all praise for the coach as well. He said that whether India wins or loses the final, Kirsten will be remembered for his quiet enthusiasm as a coach and excellent leadership.

Kirsten will not renew his contract with the Indian team owing to personal commitments, citing family as the main reason. United Nations plane crashed in congo

4 Apr 2011-A United Nations plane crashed while trying to land at the airport serving Congo's capital, Kinshasa, on Monday, killing 32 people, U.N. officials said. One person aboard survived.

"We can confirm only one survivor out of the 33 people on board the ... plane," U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said in New York. The world body earlier said Congolese and foreign nationals were on board the plane.

The operator of the plane, Georgian flag carrier Airzena Georgian Airways, said the crew was Georgian.

A U.N. source in Kinshasa, who asked not to be named, said: "The plane landed heavily, broke into two and caught fire." There were strong winds blowing at the time.

Congolese Health Ministry official Joseph Kiboko said: "We sent eight people to hospital who were still breathing, but I don't know whether they survived. Both the pilots were killed."

In New York, U.N. peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy said there had been four crew members, and that all but five of the 29 passengers were believed to be U.N. personnel. The others worked for non-governmental organizations, he told reporters.

A Reuters correspondent at the Kinshasa airport said the plane was completely destroyed and the wreckage was lying at the end of the runway.

Le Roy said the plane had missed the runway, probably due to wind. The United Nations would set up an investigation immediately, he said.

The Bombardier CRJ-200 jet, had taken off from the eastern city of Kisangani, a U.N. spokesman based in Kinshasa said.

Officials had told Reuters earlier that the plane was a CRJ-300.

The U.N.'s 19,000-strong peacekeeping mission is backing Congo government efforts to fight rebel groups that have been haunting the country's troubled east since a 1998-2003 civil war that killed five million people.

Babu Jagjivan Ram Jayanthi

Babu Jagjivan Ram Jayanthi 2011 is celebrated today on April 5th on rememberance of our veteran freedom fighter, former Deputy Prime Minister of India and beloved national leader Babu Jagjivan Ram.
Babu Jagjivan Ram's political story reads like a modern-day epic. Emerging from the soiled backwoods of caste-plagued Bihar where opportunities were limited and life was severe, this determined crusader scaled heights of success unrivalled by any other person in post- Independence history. He was respectfully called Babuji (Father) by one and all.
In retrospect what Babuji did seems unreal. Imagine having an uninterrupted parliamentary career spanning over half-a-century, a world record in political longevity. Or standing for the election and returning unopposed on no less then three occasions. Or being instrumental in making India self- sufficient in food at a time when it was at the mercy of Western left-overs. Or acquiring a legendary status for his super-efficiency and his staggering capacity for work. Or as the Defence Minister, guiding the country to its greatest military triumph - the war of 1971, which created Bangladesh.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.Kiran Kumar Reddy paid rich tributes on his 104th birth anniversary on Tuesday. You to can participate on Babu Jagjivan Ram Jayanthi 2011 by sending sms messages to your friends to commemorate his 104th birth anniversary on April 5, 2011.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.Kiran Kumar Reddy in a message today, the Chief Minister described Babu Jagjivan Ram as an able Parliamentarian who championed the cause of the poor and the downtrodden in the country until he breathed his last.
Police Commissioner A K Khan on Saturday announced traffic restrictions in the hyderabad city in view of the Babu Jagjivan Ram birthday celebrations from 5:00am to 10:00pm on April 5 near the Lal Bahadur Stadium.
His uninterrupted parliamentary career, spanning over half-a-century, was a world record in the legislative history of the country. Babuji, during his long-standing public life has left an indelible impression in the minds of the people, the Chief Minister said. He was widely admired for his leadership qualities and organizational abilities and always remained a force to be reckoned with in Indian Politics, the Chief Minister added. The Chief Minister exhorted the youth to emulate the high ideals of Babu Jagjivan Ram and to strive for building a modern India.
