Barack Obama: US economy recovering

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama said on Saturday this week's positive job and economic growth figures proved that his big spending efforts to stimulate the economy were working.

But he cautioned in his weekly radio address to Americans that "we have a long way to go before we return to prosperity" and more job losses were likely in coming days.

Democrats and Republicans agree the economy will be the top issue for the 2010 congressional elections, although the White House has disputed suggestions that they will be a judgment on Obama and his policies.

Voting in next week's Virginia and New Jersey governors' races will render a first judgment on Obama, who was sworn into office just over nine months ago in the midst of the worst recession since World War Two.

The U.S. unemployment rate remains stubbornly high at 9.8 percent, despite a $787 billion economic stimulus that Obama and his fellow Democrats, who control Congress, pushed through in February.

New unemployment numbers due out next Friday are expected to show U.S. employers cut 175,000 jobs in October, according to economists polled by Reuters. The unemployment rate is forecast to rise to 9.9 percent for October.

But new data this week showing the U.S. economy growing in the third quarter for the first time in more than a year, signaling the end of the worst recession in 70 years, was good news for the Obama administration.

"Now, economic growth is no substitute for job growth," Obama stressed in his radio address. "But we will not create the jobs we need unless the economy is growing."

Obama said steps taken by his administration to jump-start the economy, including the stimulus package of spending and tax cuts, had helped "blunt the worst of this recession."

The White House said on Friday the stimulus had directly saved or created more than 640,000 jobs so far, based on data about who had received loans or grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Obama said overall the stimulus had created or saved more than one million jobs.

"It took years to dig our way into the crisis we've faced. It will take more than a few months to dig our way out," said Obama, who blames Republicans for the economic crisis he inherited.

Republicans, who favor tax cuts, say the stimulus has failed to halt rising joblessness and they also questioned the White House's figures on jobs saved or created.

Tharoor for Indo-Pakistan cricket matches in US

KOLKATA: Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor favours an India-Pakistan cricket series in a venue like the US.

Tharoor said at a function here on Saturday that the US had a large expatriate population from India and Pakistan who would lap up the cricket clash.

"We have a large patriotic population of both Indians and Pakistanis in the US besides a handful of local cricket enthusiasts. That's a very, very good way to organise cricket in third countries when terror strikes have stopped cricket between the two countries," he said.

Tharoor said it would be great to see a baseball stadium in the US crowded for a cricket match, however small the venue may be.

Is Windows 7 Upgrade Illegal?

Microsoft says doing that violates Windows 7 End User License Agreement

Now here's something really quirky and interesting from Microsoft. With the launch of Windows 7, almost everyone is busy installing the new OS on their systems. These include brand new systems and existing computers that already had an older version of a Microsoft Operating System running. Most Vista users with a "full" license were eligible for an upgrade option wherein they could get Windows 7 for a discounted price.

In a recent blog post, Microsoft has clarified as to how a clean install done on a blank hard drive from an upgrade install disc by an user who does not own a full license is in violation of the Windows 7 EULA (End User License Agreement). The post was triggered owing to blog posts and "how tos" that help users do a clean install from an upgrade disc. Since the upgrade option is a cheaper way of getting the OS, it was a fairly attractive means of getting a licensed version of the product for less. Microsoft's EULA for upgrade discs explicitly states that must own a full version of a previous version of Windows if you want to use the Windows 7 upgrade disc. Now, what this means is that when you do a clean install, you are no longer own a "previous version" and are hence breaking the terms of the EULA.

Microsoft has clarified the circumstances in which a clean install is perfectly legal in the following excerpt from the post:

"Now there are many, many, many, many of you out there that already own Windows licenses that qualify for the Windows 7 Upgrade, so this is a non-issue for you. (I am talking about people who own a FULL license for a previous version of Windows for their computers already, as shown in the first picture example above.) For you, since you have the previous version FULL Windows license and qualify for the Windows 7 Upgrade, you have the rights to do a "clean" install. For those of you without an existing FULL Windows license to upgrade from, you should be aware that an Upgrade license by itself is not a license to install and run Windows on your computer. (As an FYI, those who don't own a full previous version Windows license, and just downloaded the Windows 7 Beta, RC, or RTM code during the trial phases, the Windows 7 Beta, RC, and RTM trials are not qualifying licenses for the upgrade since they are just trial software, not fully licensed software.) In order to be eligible to use the Windows 7 upgrade, you need to have a qualifying license to upgrade from."

A labourer's son now caught in corruption scam : Koda

Former Jharkhand chief minister and Lok Sabha MP Madhu Koda, who faces allegations of largescale corruption, is the son of a labourer whose family was once steeped in dire poverty.

Born in Patahatu village in West Singhbhum district, Koda, now 38, also worked as a labourer for a while in Jharkhand's rural parts before he decided to embrace politics.

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1994, when the Congress was seen as a declining force. He got the ticket to contest assembly elections in 2000 and quickly became a minister after Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in the same year.

He served as minister in both Babula Marandi and Arjun Mundu governments between 2000-2005.

He quit the BJP five years later when the party refused to field him in assembly elections.
He fought the 2005 elections as an independent from Jagganthpur assembly seat and won.

Ironically, the BJP had to take Koda's support, and that of four other independents, to form the government in 2005. Koda became mines and geology minister in the new governmnt.

Very soon, stories of his corrupt dealings were rampant.

"We have come across some deals when Koda was the mines and geology minister and Arjun Munda was the chief minister. The deals indicate unaccounted transaction of money," Ujjawal Choudhary of the Income Tax department said.

Koda had differences with Munda over several issues. With the support of three other independents, he brought down the Munda government in September 2006.

Koda became chief minister with the support of the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

His time as the chief minister from September 2006 to August 2008 generated reams of stories about his wrongdoing.

Two of three independents, who revolted along with Koda against Munda, are now in jail on graft cases. The third, Kamlesh Singh, also faces corruption allegations.

Despite anger in the Congress against him, coalition politics came in the way of his ouster.

In 2009, he fought the Lok Sabha election and won as an independent from Singhbhum.

Two cases of corruption have been lodged against Koda. He is accused of amassing assets beyond his known sources of income.

The Enforcement Directorate has lodged a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Koda has been accused of purchasing mines in Liberia in the name of his close associates worth $1.7 million (Rs 8.5 crore).

On Saturday, the income tax department and enforcement directorate raided 70 places across eight cities of India. Koda was also interrogated.

The Jharkhand vigilance department has also lodged a case against his associates -- Vinod Sinha and Sanjay Chaudhary.

THE Pakistan says offensive against Taliban 'very successful'

Kuala Lumpur: Pakistan's offensive in South Waziristan has been "very successful" and the military is likely to achieve most of its objectives before winter sets in, the Foreign Minister said Sunday.

Since October 17 some 30,000 Pakistani troops have been waging a major assault against Taliban fighters hiding out in the formidable terrain of South Waziristan, which borders Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the military has made significant headway in the region, part of the tribal belt where United States officials say al Qaeda is plotting attacks on the West.
"The operation so far has been very successful. The resistance that we were expecting initially did not come with the same stiffness as we expected," he said on the sidelines of a conference of developing nations in Kuala Lumpur.

"We would want to achieve our objectives as much as possible before the winter sets in. It seems, as things are going on right now, that we might be able to do so," he said.

"That area becomes very cold so we want to operate and establish our foothold before that," he said. Qureshi would not give a date, but winter sets in around mid-December in that region.

Qureshi said that many important towns and locations were now in the control of Pakistan's Army and that "quite a few" militants had been killed or arrested.

Amitabh 'Aladin' a cool family entertainer

Film: "Aladin"; Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandes, Saahil Khan, Ratna Pathak; Director: Sujoy Ghosh

"I am still a teenager", says Amitabh Bachchan right at the beginning of "Aladin", setting the mood for the film to follow. Young at heart and fresh in treatment, "Aladin" wouldn't have been possible without him.

Playing Genius - The Genie could have gone either way since he is expected to be whacky, quirky, a little eccentric, a bit mad and hugely lovable. The narrative is clearly divided into two sections. If the first half is more children friendly, the second half has a lot going for teenagers and above.

There is some fun in store for children with a donkey's head replacing Riteish's, his guitar turning into a frog and him being thrown in the air after being turned into a balloon. The funny antics that follow may not have grown ups rolling with laughter, but should surely keep the smiles on.

Amitabh's 'Yo dude' act keeps the fun going. He adopts a completely different body language as the flamboyant genie, who is happy moving on with the times, and could give the younger generation a run for its money. Meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt's Ringmaster character makes on and off appearances, though one would have expected to see more of him. The entire past about Aladin and the Genius gets a little confusing.

The real fun begins in the second half with the battle between good versus evil. Sanjay becomes more prominent on screen, the past is unearthed, action and thrills take centrestage and the best of VFX is unveiled. The visuals belong to the never-seen-before variety, especially the ones where Big B is shown repenting about his misdeeds. The flashback sequence is extremely well done too.

Sujoy Ghosh does well in conjuring the imaginary world of 'Khwaish' that gives the film a visual appeal. This is further enhanced by the presence of newcomer Jacqueline Fernandes. Riteish is likeable as the young man who gets superpowers towards the film's end, hence keeping an option for a sequel.

Sanjay is good but how one wishes that he had at least a couple of dramatic scenes with Amitabh. However, the film completely belongs to Amitabh who totally steals the show. Watch him in "Genie Rap" and you'll know why. The story of "Aladin" is legendary and Genie and Jasmine are known worldwide. This is why it requires courage for a filmmaker to set the film in contemporary times and come up with his own take on a well loved tale.

Ghosh does exactly that as he lets his imagination go wild and spins a tale that ends up relating the past, present and future of these characters. This VFX filled entertainer is just the right recipe if one is looking for a family entertainer.

Indian yoga guru refuses to give lessons

London: Pop diva Madonna was left fuming after well-known Indian yoga guru Bikram Choudhury refused to give her private lessons insisting that the singer would have to take classes with his other students.

The pop superstar had recently parted ways with her longterm fitness trainer Tracy Anderson saying that she wanted to try a new method of working out, reports contactmusic.com. Madonna's plan to hire "Bikram Yoga" inventor Bikram Choudhury went awry when the yoga guru turned down her request accusing her of being too temperamental.

"Madonna came to me and asked for private lessons. I told her that if you want to learn from me, then you have to come to my classes. You have to leave your ego behind," said Choudhury. "If you disagree with her (Madonna), you are immediately blacklisted," he added.

Choudhury insisted none of his other celebrity clients, including George Clooney, Jessica Simpson and Jim Carrey have ever objected to his methods.

This is it movie earned $20 Million on first day

Los Angeles: "This Is It", the documentary movie that followed Michael Jackson's concert rehearsals in the days before his shock death in June, earned $20.1 million at the US box office on its first full day of release, according to The Hollywood Reporter Thursday.

The film earned a $12.7 million internationally and another $7.4 million in the US, the report said.

The enthusiastic reception could prompt Sony Pictures to extend the movie's two week screening window, as positive reviews and word-of-mouth approval send more fans to see the 90-minute documentary culled from some 100 hours of rehearsal footage. The box office haul was released in conjunction with a report from Forbes magazine that identified Jackson as one of the year's top earning dead celebrities. He earned $90 million in the year, including $72 million since his death.

Jackson was beaten by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, who earned $350 million, and songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein who earned $235 million. But he came ahead of last year's No. 1, Elvis Presley, with $55 million; "The Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien with $50 million; and John Lennon with $9 million.

Jackson's father Joe Jackson announced Wednesday night that a tribute museum to the star would be built in his hometown of Gary, Indiana. The Jackson patriarch, who has been accused of numerous attempts to cash in on his son's talent, announced plans for the museum, hotel and performing arts centre together with Gary mayor Rudy Clay in Los Angeles. However there were no details on how the projects will be funded and it is unclear whether Jackson's estate will back the effort.
