Academy’s 2009–2010 Contemporary Docs Series Concludes with Love and Betrayal

Beverly Hills, CA — “Tongzhi in Love” and 2008 Oscar® nominee “The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)” will screen as the final installment in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 28th annual “Contemporary Documentaries” series on Wednesday, June 9, at 7 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Admission is free.

Directed by Ruby Yang and produced by Thomas Lennon, “Tongzhi in Love” examines the dilemmas of being gay in today’s China. The film follows three young men who are torn between their modern lives and the families and traditions with which they grew up.

Filmed over the course of 23 years by cinematographer Ellen Kuras, “The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)” is the story of a family’s epic journey from war-torn Laos to the streets of New York. Directed by Kuras, co-directed by Thavisouk Phrasavath, and produced by Kuras and Flora Fernandez-Marengo, the “The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)” earned an Academy Award® nomination for Documentary Feature.

The “Contemporary Documentaries” series is a showcase of feature-length and short films that competed in the documentary categories in the previous Awards year. The 29th annual series is set to begin in October.
