Bangladesh in disarray: Cricket News
Mirpur: Bangladesh’s last hope of putting up a competitive total was shattered in the form of skipper Shakib Al Hasan’s wicket that left the home team reeling at 127/7.
Shakib (34) was sent back by Zaheer Khan after the batsman slashed at a short and wide delivery outside the off-stump and got a snick into the safe hands of Dhoni.
Ishant Sharma picked his third wicket of the match in the form of Mushfiqur Rahim, who tried his best to bring Bangladesh back into the game with a half century partnership with Shakib Al Hasan but had to take the long walk back to the pavilion after being trapped plumb in front of the wickets for 30.
After losing half of their side with just 51 runs on the board, Mushfiqur Rahim and skipper Shakib Al Hasan put together a 50-run partnership to help the home team cross the 100 mark but still miles away from a challenging total.
Bangladesh’s decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired as the Indian bowlers ripped them apart to reduce the home team to a miserable 84/5 at lunch.
Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma were the chief destroyers with 2 wickets each while Pragyan Ojha took the final wicket to fall before the break.
Bangladesh were in deep trouble as the Indian bowlers sent half of their team back with just 50 on the board.
Soon after the home team crossed the fifty-run mark, it was time for another batsman to take the long walk back to the pavilion. Mohammad Ashraful (39), in a rush of blood, stepped out to thump Pragyan Ojha outside the ground but missed the ball completely and Dhoni made no mistake behind the stumps. Bangladesh’s scorecard read a miserable 51/5
After a small partnership of 31 runs between Raqibul Hasan and Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh’s hopes of coming back into the match received a major jolt as Ishant Sharma dismissed Raqibul Hasan to reduce Bangladesh to 44/4.
Raqibul, who became Ishant’s second victim of the match, attempted a drive off a fullish delivery outside the off stump but ended up getting an edge into the safe hands of Rahul Dravid at second slip.
Zaheer Khan took his second wicket of the morning in the form of Junai Siddique to reduce the home team to 13/3. Siddique was caught by Dhoni for 8 as he half-heartedly fended at a delivery down the leg side and managed to get an edge.
Moments after Ishant Sharma provided the visitors with the first breakthrough, it was Zaheer Khan’s turn to join the party as he cleaned up Tamim Iqbal off the first delivery of his second over to reduce Bangladesh to 4/2.
Tamim’s stumps were dislodged as the Zaheer managed to get one to nip back into the batsman after pitching it on a good length.
Ishant Sharma took India off to a brilliant start as he removed opener Imrul kayes off his very first delivery of the match. Bangladesh lost a wicket with no runs on the board.
Kayes was caught behind the wickets by MS Dhoni as he tried to clip a delivery going down the leg side but got a thin edge instead.
Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and elected to bat first in the second Test against India being played here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
Bangladesh made a change to their playing eleven. Shahriar Nafees was left out, and in came Junaid Siddique.
India on the other hand, shook up their side a bit with four changes. VVS Laxman, Dinesh Karthik, Sreesanth and Amit Mishra were left out. MS Dhoni, who missed the first Test due to a back strain, came in for Karthik. Pragyan Ojha replaced Mishra while Murali Vijay came in for Laxman. The last change was in the form of Harbhajan Singh, who came back after recovering from his neck problem.
