Apple iPhone 3G vs Google Nexus One

The competition is hotting up fast for iPhone 3G S, arguably the smartest kid on the smartphone block. Unfortunately, it may still stay that way for some more time until a really viable, do-it-all alternative smarter than Apple’s emerges.

Google, with its just launched Android-powered Nexus One, has come close to be eligible for that tag, but it may still be too early that people will start buying Nexus One over iPhone in threatening numbers.

Though the phone opened up to rave reviews, analysts claim that the phone doesn't offer anything revolutionary in terms of design and features as created by Apple iPhone when it launched its first model in the year 2007.

In a comparison of primary features, Google’s phone doesn’t seem to do too bad, but it still has to come off age as a complete package. Thinner than iPhone, Google Nexus One features a 3.7-inch (9.4 centimeter) AMOLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) touchscreen display. Measuring 119mm (H) X 59.8mm (W) X 11.5mm (D), the phone offers 800x480 pixel screen resolution.

On the other hand, iPhone 3G S comes with 3.5-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen display with 320 x 480 pixels. The phone measures 115.5 x 62 x 12.3 mm.

iPhone's current model runs on iPhone 3.1 OS. The phone is powered by ARM Cortex A8 processor. Among key features, the upgraded software now lets users cut, copy & paste, a sorely missed feature in the iPhone 2.0. iPhone 3.0 also offers multimedia messaging capability with the new 3.0 software allowing users to send each other photographs from the phone.

Nexus One will run on Android Mobile Technology Platform 2.1 software, the most recent version of the mobile platform offered by Google. The phone has a 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Android 2.1 which adds several 3D user interface features and lets users customise home screen.

Apple claims that iPhone 3G S supports up to 12 hours of talk time, 30 hours of audio, 9 hours of Wi-Fi, 10 hours on video playback, and 5 hours of 3G talk time.

According to Google, Nexus One will offer talk time of up to 10 hours on 2G, up to 7 hours on 3G. Standby time is up to 290 hours on 2G and up to 250 hours on 3G. The phone offers video playback of up to 7 hours and audio playback of up to 20 hours.

Apple iPhone App Store iTunes offers people over 90,000 apps. Nexus One, on the other hand has its own Android Market that offers mere 20,000 applications.

Unlike iPhone, Google's first-gen handset offers a 5 megapixel camera (with auto focus, a 2x digital zoom and LED flash) and video recording at 20fps (720 x480).

The third-gen iPhone packs a 3 megapixel camera with video capturing, auto-focus mechanism and editing capabilities. The earlier two versions shipped with only a 2 megapixel camera each.

Nexus One features a voice-enabled keyboard that allows users to speak emails, text messages or Internet search queries. Nexus One can provide turn-by-turn spoken driving directions from a Google mapping programme. The phone also has a digital compass and a light sensor.

iPhone 3G S also has a voice control feature which allows users to dial by speaking the name or number. It also enables playing of music by artist, album or playlist and you can pause the music, play the next track and turn on shuffle. Many will aver that iPhone’s music playing capability is better.

As for memory, Nexus One packs 512MB Flash, 512MB RAM and 4GB Micro SD Card which can be expanded to 32GB.

Apple's third generation iPhone comes in two memory options, 16GB and 32GB. The phone has 256MB RAM. But iPhone 3GS doesn't have a card slot for further memory expansion, which is a sore point.

A big disappointment in Google Nexus One is that it doesn't support multi-touch functionality unlike Apple iPhone 3G S.

A trademark of Apple, multi-touch allows users to interact with the device by placing two or more fingers directly onto the surface of the screen.

The locked version of Nexus One comes with a price tag of $179, which includes a two-year service contract with T-Mobile USA. However, the unlocked model of the phone will cost a whopping $529. Many analysts said they had not expected Google would go for such a high price band if it had to take on Apple and Blackberry.

The 16GB iPhone 3GS comes with a price tag of $199, and the 32GB model with $299 contract. The unlocked phone typically costs around $599.
