NRMP

NRMP or the National Resident Matching Program is a private sector which was founded in 1952. Its function is to give uniform date of appointment to position in Graduate Medical Education. This year’s Residency Match is by far the largest in NRMP history. It encompasses more than 37, 000 applicants, 4, 100 Graduate Medical Education Programs and 25, 500 residency training positions.

NRMP’s appointment next year is finding new matches for Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPRS) Fellowships. Interested applicants should register at the FPRS programs for the FPRS Fellowship Match and not on the OB-GYN Fellowship Match.

NRMP also welcomed Medical Genetics as a new fellowship match for next year’s appointment. Its Fellowship Match registration will open on July 28 of this year. Simultaneously, its programs will also begin using the Electronic Residency Application Service.

NRMP conducts a residency match annually which is designed to optimize the rank ordered choices of students and program directors. And then, at the third week of the month of March, the results are announced.

NRMP is run by its board of directors: 5 medical education organizations, 1 program director organization and 3 medical student organizations nominate candidates for election to the board.

NRMP residency match approximately has 16, 000 US medical school students participants annually. Additionally, 20, 000 independent applicants compete for more or less 25, 000 available resideny positions.

NRMP enrolled 4, 299 programs in the Match last year. That offered 25, 185 positions garnering a total of 35, 972 applicants. The 15, 638 were 2009 graduates from accredited US medical schools while 21, 334 were independent applicants.
