Established with 2/3rd expenditure borne by the UGC and remaining 1/3re by Gauhati University itself, in the year 1964, the Gauhati University Press has completed 41 years of its successful service to this premier institution of higher learning of North East India. Started with meager 10 employees and a handful of letterpress machineries, the press has grown to a medium scale printing press in subsequent years and at present it has 50 employees including 7 no.s in fixed pay and 5 no.s in daily wage.
Housed in an Assam Type building of plinth area approx. 4500 sq. ft. Of course the building is not adequate for installation of modern computerized printing technologies and machineries, and arrangement of an RCC building with proper layout and space is in progress.
Till 1996 the press run with Letterpress technologies, out of which only one flat-bed (Victoria Front), one Grapho automatic platen, and one Treadle machine are in working condition. As a part of the Modernization process of the press, the press has procured two offset machines, of sizes 15”x20” and 20”x30” respectively. Besides, there are three computers with Laser printer and Scanner. Of course, these machinery are not sufficient to maintain the quality of the growing printing demands of the University that has more than 202 affiliated colleges, 37 teaching departments, 20 residential hostels, and conducting more than 220 exams per year. Planning and execution for other hi-tech machinery and facilities is in full swing.
The GU press is managed by a Press Management Committee, Chaired by Prof. Srinath Baruah, Hon’ble Member of Executive Council, GU, with members of different other committees of the University and Experts from the Printing Industry and Financial Institutions.
