UN OFFICIALS EXPRESS SADNESS AFTER DEADLY QUAKE STRIKES WESTERN CHINA

General Assembly President Ali Treki and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced sadness after learning of the earthquake that struck western China this morning, killing hundreds of people and injuring thousands more, and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Media reports say the quake, which registered 7.1 on the Richter scale, was centred in Qinghai province and took place just before 8 a.m.

In a statement issued by his office, Dr. Treki “expresses solidarity with and sends his condolences and prayers to the people and Government of China on this tragedy.”

Mr. Ban, in a statement released by his spokesperson, said the UN is ready to provide assistance to the Chinese Government if needed.

“The Secretary-General recognizes the efforts being undertaken by the Government of China to assess the situation and to assist those affected by the earthquake.”
