Hindus suggest Katie Price a dip in River Ganga
Welcoming British celebrity Katie Price’s reported interest in spiritual trip to holy river Ganga in India; Hindus suggest that taking the dip in Ganga’s sacred waters during the current Kumbh Mela period would be more beneficial.
According to a belief, all sins/evils committed by the Mela pilgrims and their ancestors back to the 88th generation will be washed away forever by a dip in Ganga during these dates and that they will achieve salvation and emerge regenerated and healed. Its observance is believed to go back to ancient Vedic period and the legend of “Churning of the Ocean” is associated with it.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged Katie to go to the Mela as a pilgrim and not as tourist or to make a fashion statement, and in addition to immersing in holy Ganga waters, also explore the rich philosophy which Hinduism offers. He offered to help Katie if asked.
According to reports, Katie (Katrina Amy Alexandria Alexis Infield Price), 31, has shown interest in taking a dip in Ganga, spiritual visit to India, evolving a new persona through spiritualism, cleansing her soul, finding her true self, visiting holy sites and temples of India, and finding inner peace. Born in Brighton (United Kingdom), she is an actress-author-media personality-model-producer-songwriter and a former topless model.
Termed as biggest spiritual gathering on earth, Kumbh Mela (pot-fete) is being held from January 14 (Makarsankranti) to April 28 (Vaisakh Aadhimaas Purnima) and includes 11 bathing dates in between, at Haridwar, where fast-flowing Ganga enters the plains from Himalaya. Held four times every twelve years and rotating among Allahabad, Nasik, Haridwar, and Ujjain (all in India); this Mela takes place when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and Sun enters Aries.
Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said that Katie should get solace and “rediscover” herself by spending some time in an ashram (hermitage) and taking a dip in holy Ganga, which finds mention in Rig-Veda, oldest existing scripture of mankind dated around 1,500 BCE. Zed pointed out that ashram stay would help bring Katie tranquility, spirituality and serenity. Ashram is a place of retreat usually used for spiritual development and India is full of them. Members of English rock band “The Beatles” (Yellow Submarine) spent long periods at a Rishikesh ashram on the Ganga river bank.
Generally ashrams are located away from the crowds in forests or other places amidst natural surroundings which are suitable for meditation and spiritual instruction and find mention in Hindu scriptures. Lord Krishna himself went to sage Sandipani’s ashram to gain knowledge, Rajan Zed points out.
Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and moksha (liberation) is its ultimate goal.
