iPad; Apple iPad; Apple New Product Updates

The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. It will be released in March 2010. It features multi-touch interaction with print, video, photo, and audio multimedia, internet browsing, and runs most iPhone OS apps. The device has an LED-backlit 9.7-inch (25 cm) color LCD display and uses a virtual keyboard for text input.

Apple's development of a tablet computer began with the Newton MessagePad 100, which was introduced in 1993. The effort led to the creation of the ARM6 processor core with Acorn Computers. Apple also developed a prototype PowerBook Duo-based tablet computer named the PenLite, then canceled the project as too similar to the Newton line. Apple brought out several more Newton-based PDAs, and discontinued the last of the line, the MessagePad 2100, in 1998.

Apple renewed efforts to develop a tablet as early as 2000. Apple CEO Steve Jobs canceled the project twice, once due to insufficient battery life, and again due to inadequate memory. After returning from medical leave, Jobs devoted most of his attention at Apple to completing the device, striking deals with print media companies before the product's announcement.

The product was announced on January 27, 2010, at an Apple press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The device's imminent release had been rumored for several months with iSlate and iTablet among speculated names.

The iPad is to be available for sale at the end of March (Wi-Fi version, worldwide) and end of April (Wi-Fi + 3G version, in the United States and some other countries) 2010. International 3G prices are to be announced summer 2010. The Wi-Fi + 3G iPad will be unlocked so it can be used on other mobile carriers that support GSM micro-SIMs. 3G will be provided in the U.S. by AT&T and sold with two prepaid contract-free data plan options, the cheaper of which only includes 250 MB of data a month, but it is half the price of the unlimited plan. The plans will be activated on the iPad itself and can be canceled at any time.

NSTSE National Science Talent Search Examination

NSTSE is a diagnostic test which actually helps students improve. Unlike regular tests which try only to find out how much a child knows (or has memorized), NSTSE measures how well a student has understood concepts and gives detailed feedback on the same, to help them improve.

Thus NSTSE helps each student know whether he/she has actually understood a concept early on so that immediate action can be taken. Often students have conceptual gaps which increase as they progress and when they reach the higher classes, they develop a "phobia" for the subject.

School tests - including board exams - tend to be superficial, testing what children have memorised. But the important skills like the ability to think independently and reason logically - critical in today's world - are often not emphasised in school tests.

The focus on fundamentals is so important that when the child finishes studies he/she will have to face the competitive world armed with these fundamentals. Even while opting for higher studies, the student has to go through a complete scan of what he/she knows and how much. Exams like IIT-JEE, AIEEE, AFMC, AIIMS, GRE, GMAT, CAT etc., are so designed to test the fundamental strength of student. Hence the need of the hour is building the fundamentals base as strong as possible.

This exactly is the philosophy behind the Unified Council's NSTSE.

Avatar Won Golden Globe Award

Avatar is a 3-D science fiction epic film written and directed by James Cameron, due to be released on December 16, 2009 by 20th Century Fox. The film is Lightstorm Entertainment's latest project, and focuses on an epic conflict on a far-away world called Pandora, where humans and the native species of Pandora, the Na'vi, engage in a war over the planet's resources and existence.

The film will be released in 2D and 3D formats, along with an IMAX 3D release in selected theaters. The film is being touted as a breakthrough in terms of filmmaking technology, for its development of 3D viewing and stereoscopic filmmaking with cameras that were specially designed for the film's production. The film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking.

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth after crashing a friend's car when swerving to miss a possum. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race, who are considered primitive, yet are more physically capable than humans. Standing three meters tall (approximately 10 feet), with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.

Kumbh Mela Haridwar; Speciality of Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela a mass Hindu pilgrimage. The Purna (complete) Kumbh takes place at four places (Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik) after every twelve years, while the Ardh Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Prayag. Over 45 days beginning in January 2007, more than 17 million Hindu pilgrims took part in the Ardh Kumbh Mela at Prayag, and on January 15, the most auspicious day of the festival of Makar Sankranti, more than 5 million participated.

The Maha Kumbh Mela ('Great' Kumbh Mela) which comes after 12 'Purna Kumbh Melas' which is after every 144 years is also held at Allahabad. The 2001, Maha Kumbh Mela was attended by around 60 million people, making it the largest gathering anywhere in the world.

According to Indian astrology, it is celebrated when the planet of Bṛhaspati (Jupiter) moves into the zodiac sign of Aquarius or Kumbha. Each site's celebration dates are calculated in advance according to a special combination of zodiacal positions of Sun, Moon, and Jupiter.

The observance of Kumbh Mela dates back many centuries in Ancient India to the Vedic period, where the river festivals first started getting organised. In Hindu mythology, its origin is found in one of the popular creation myths and the Hindu theories on evolution, the Samudra manthan episode (Churning of the ocean of milk), which finds mention in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, the Mahabharata, and the Ramayana.

The Gods had lost their strength, and to regain it, they thought of churning the Ksheera Sagara (primordial ocean of milk) for amrit (the nectar of immortality), this required them to make a temporary agreement with their arch enemies, the demons or Asuras, to work together with a promise of sharing the nectar equally thereafter. However, when the Kumbha (urn) containing the amrita appeared, a fight ensued. For twelve days and twelve nights (equivalent to twelve human years) the gods and demons fought in the sky for the pot of amrita. It is believed that during the battle, Lord Vishnu flew away with the Kumbha of elixir, and that is when drops of amrita fell at four places on earth: Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, and that is where the Kumbh Mela is observed every twelve years.

First written evidence of the Kumbha Mela can be found in the accounts of Chinese traveller, Huan Tsang or Xuanzang (602 - 664 A.D.) who visited India in 629 -645 CE, during the reign of King Harshavardhana According to The Imperial Gazetteer of India, an outbreak of cholera occurred at the 1892 Mela at Haridwar, which lead to the rapid improvement of arrangements by the authorities and the formation of Haridwar Improvement Society, and in 1903 about 400,000 people attended the fair. During the 1954 Kumbh Mela stampede at Allahabad, around 500 people were killed, and scores were injured. Ten million people gathered at Haridwar for the Kumbh on April 14, 1998.

Himachal police gets trendy blue look

Shimla: This summer, men in blue will guard the hills of Himachal Pradesh. There will be women in blue too. They are not members of the Indian cricket team but of the 17,000-strong Himachal Pradesh police force, which is all set to shed its khaki uniform for blue.

"We have decided to shed the traditional khaki uniform and opt for the new blue uniform for the police force from this summer. It is, of course, in vogue throughout the world," Director General of Police G.S. Gill told IANS.

"The aim is to give a unique identity to the cops, right from a constable to an inspector. Since the hill state is a pollution-free state, the blue attire will symbolise raw nature. Moreover, the dress will not only give the police personnel a smart look but also help shed their rough and brutal image," he said.

The new uniform is dark blue trousers, light blue shirt and blue beret. Accessories such as shoes and belts will remain black. Both policemen and women will wear the same uniform. "For the past many years, we had been working on various colour combinations. Finally, in 2008 we decided to give a go ahead to the blue uniform. But it was not possible immediately to change the uniform as huge stocks of khaki were lying with the police. So we decided to first exhaust the old stock and then order for the new one," he said.

Gill said that initially, there was some opposition to this idea.

"After initial reluctance, now most of the cops have agreed and understand the need to give a new look to the force," a senior police officer said.

"At first, the cops posted in the districts would be given the new uniform. Later, the policemen deployed in the battalions would be provided the new dress. However, there is no extra expenditure involved as the khaki uniform is almost exhausted in police stores," assistant inspector general V.K. Dhawan said. Dhawan said personnel above the rank of inspector, both of the Himachal Police Services (HPS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre would continue to wear khaki. "Nearly 250 personnel of the HPS and IPS would continue to wear the traditional khaki dress since countrywide, the uniform of IPS and state-cadre officers is the same," he said.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal had in June 2008 given a green signal to change the police uniform. At that time, the director general of police was Ashwani Kumar, who is now the director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The new dress was also displayed at the Republic Day parade at the historic Ridge here in 2008.

Dravid operated for injured jaw

Bangalore: Star batsman Rahul Dravid Friday had minor corrective surgery on his left cheek bone, injured during the second cricket test against Bangladesh in Mirpur.

"It was a minor surgery to fix the left cheek bone where he had suffered a fracture. The surgery took between 45 minutes to an hour," S. Ballal, medical director of Manipal Hospital here where the surgery was conducted, told IANS.

"Dravid is doing fine after the surgery and hopefully will be discharged late Friday," he added.

Dravid can resume normal activities in two days but has been advised to stay away from cricket or any contact sports for three weeks, he said.

Ganga River may infects you

Haridwar: A dip in the Ganga here, especially during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, may wash away your sins but leave you with skin diseases, stomach bugs and a host of other health problems, says a study conducted by a scientific institute in Uttarakhand.

Researchers at the People's Science Institute (PSI) in Dehradun have found that the Ganga in Haridwar contains high concentration of faecal coliforms, a type of bacteria originating in faeces that can cause several health hazards. Devotees converging here from across the globe have been taking dips in the river as the Jan 14-April 28 Maha Kumbh Mela has been drawing millions.

The water quality at Har-ki-Pauri, the ghat that attracts most pilgrims as it is considered the spiritual soul of Haridwar, did not meet the standards for outdoor bathing set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). "Bathing in the river definitely involves a great risk as you become vulnerable to infections by bacteria and other pathogens," Anil Gautam, head of the environmental quality monitoring group at PSI, told IANS Friday.

"Faecal coliform contamination may cause a number of waterborne pathogenic diseases. Once you come in contact with such bacteria, you become prone to develop skin or ear infections, dysentery, gastroenteritis and other health problems that may even turn serious," he added.

Days before the Maha Kumbh started here, PSI took samples from 10 drains discharging water into the Ganga at different locations in Haridwar along with samples of the river water at three locations including Har-ki-pauri, Jagjeetpur and Saptrishi. According to the study, discharge of untreated waste from non-functioning sewage treatment plants (STPs) and effluents from different drains into the river was primarily responsible for the faecal contamination.

"Faecal coliform count of 500 MPN (maximum probable number) per 100 ml is considered standard by the CPCB for outdoor bathing. However, in our tests we observed that the count in the water samples exceeded the standard," said Gautam. "At Har-ki-Pauri the count was 1,500 MPN per 100 ml. At Saptrishi the count was 1,000 MPN/100 ml. The worst condition was at the Jagjeetpur site where the count was recorded at around 7.5 million MPN/100 ml," he added.

According to PSI, the STP at Jagjeetpur alone releases about 129 million litres daily.

"The STPs including that of the Jagjeetpur are just not enough as their sewage treatment capacity is far less than the volumes of sewage they get for treatment," said Gautam.

The study has not yet been released but the researchers plan to send their findings to public representatives, including legislators of Uttarakhand soon. Many of the pilgrims who have travelled here from different pars of the country were repulsed on hearing about the findings of the study.

"If you had told me about the study, I would not have opted for a bath at all. Probably I would have just sprinkled some drops of water," Nilesh Sinha, from Bihar's Motihari town, told IANS.

Dwarika Lal, who has come here from Nagpur, was equally shocked. "If the findings of the study are publicised at a mass scale, there will surely be a considerable decline in the number of devotees opting for the holy bath here in the Ganga."

Shah Rukh Khan's Home Theatre

Mumbai: The growing proximity between Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan just got thicker. The latter requested for a print of "Rann" to kick-start his newly-constructed home theatre at his residence here.

"Shah Rukh specifically wanted to inaugurate his home theatre with a Bachchan starrer. Luckily, 'Rann' was on release this week. So he asked Karan Johar to quickly dial Bachchan who put him on to the producers of 'Rann'. The producers gladly arranged for a print of 'Rann' to be delivered to SRK's place on Thursday evening," said a source close to the actor.

Produced by Madhu Matenna and Sheetal Talwar, the film on media has Amitabh in the lead role. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, it hit the screens Friday.

After watching the film till very late on Thursday night, Shah Rukh sent an appreciative SMS to the film's producer which read: "Very kind of you to send the film across. Very intense very topical good performances all round. The viewpoint is very current."

Apparently Shah Rukh wanted to invite Bachchan to view "Rann" in his home theatre. But he was in Delhi to attend the premiere of "Rann".

"I'm in Delhi meeting various members of the press trying to understand why 'Rann' is being perceived as being against them. Or why I'm being seen to have issues with the press. Not at all! I've always respected the press," said Bachchan Thursday afternoon.

Tell him the perception of Bachchan being anti-press goes back to those years in the 1980s when he had banned the press, and he replies: "I banned them because they had banned me. But now that's in the past. Writing my

Luhrmann & Rahman thinking of working together

Oscar nominated Australian film director-actor-producer-writer Baz Luhrmann’s (Moulin Rouge!) dream is to make a movie in India, according to reports. During his current India trip, he reportedly had lunch with Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his family and met Oscar winner musician A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), whom he calls a “friend” and “maestro”. After meeting Rahman, Luhrmann reportedly expressed that they were thinking of jointly creating some work.

Luhrmann apparently seemed to be impressed about how much Bollywood offered in a single movie. Oscar awardee Satyajit Ray (Pather Panchali) had reportedly left a great influence on Luhrmann, 47, who claims to have seen Oscar nominated Lagaan (Ashutosh Gowarikar).

During the current India visit, Luhrmann and Archibald Prize winner Australian portrait painter Vincent Fantauzzo reportedly painted a dance-themed mural on the wall of "le Sutra—the Indian art hotel” in Mumbai, claimed to be India’s first art hotel.

Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, welcoming Luhrmann for this art-exploration trip of India, urged other world filmmakers that instead of just focusing on poverty and crime, they should also explore many finer and deeper things India offered. Planet’s most multidimensional country, fast growing economy, emerging world power, largest democracy, etc.; India had snowcapped mountains, palm-fringed and sun-washed beaches, glorious temples, colorful festivals, rich philosophy and spirituality, abundant historical sites, wildlife safaris, recharging treks, historic trade routes, cultural wealth, etc. Zed, who is chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, added.

Presently Luhrmann is reportedly planning to film “The Great Gatsby” (1925 American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald) , which has already been filmed four times starting with Herbert Brenon’s 1926 production, which is expected to go to floor this year.
